History and Tradition

As you approach Trassenheide, you will see a Dutch-style windmill from a distance. It had been destroyed for a long time, but was recently rebuilt and functions as the town’s landmark.

Kulturhof Mölschow

Regional history, customs and tradition are kept alive at Kulturhof Mölschow. On a total area of 560 square metres, demonstration workshops offer insight into traditional trades, for instance basket-making, felting, spinning, weaving, wood carving and pottery. A restaurant has hearty dishes on offer and you can spend the night in the guest-house.

Peenemünde

History was written not far from Trassenheide, in a small place called Peenemünde. Peenemünde is known around the world as research and test centre of Hitler’s “V-2” rocket. Today, a museum informs about this part of Peenemünde’s history. The V-2 was the first ballistic missile and progenitor of all modern military and space rockets.

Ostseebad Zinnowitz

Another popular destination is the open-air theatre in neighbouring Zinnowitz. Vineta is the name of a multi-media theatre spectacle, consisting of acting, music, dance, fireworks and a laser show. From the beginning of June until the end of August, Chapeau Rouge, takes place in Heringsdorf. Chapeau Rouge is a colourful event, including theatre, artistry and puppet shows, in a tent whose interior is decorated with red velvet.

Otto Niemeyer-Holstein in Koserow

Apart from many other museums and galleries on the Isle of Usedom, the studio of the artist Otto Niemeyer-Holstein, situated in Koserow, is well worth a visit. At Koserow, a lovely, picturesque village at a narrowing of the Isle, between the Baltic and the backwater, was an inspiration to Niemeyer-Holstein’s landscape painting.
